Eight Ways to Enhance Your Journaling Experience
By Deborah Bouziden
Have you been journaling for a number of years and find at times you are bored by what you are doing? Read the following eight suggestions and perhaps you will find a way to liven up those entries.
Listen to special music. Do you have a selection of music that when you listen to it, the notes sooth your soul? Perhaps there is a piece that causes you to dance. Put on a CD or turn on the radio and write to the mood of the music.
Write with different colored markers instead of a pen or pencil. Sometimes writing with a pen or pencil can become boring, at the very least expected. Shake the visual part of your senses up by experimenting with different colored markers.
Change locations. Are you writing at the kitchen table every day? Go outside, sit on the ground, visit a playground or a lake, and write in your journal. Sometimes a change of scenery will give you a new perspective on many things.
Try a different journaling technique. Are you stuck in a specific type of writing rut? Do you just freewrite? Perhaps you have written iambic pentameter for the last ten years and can’t seem to move on. Try making lists, writing dialogues with your inner self or simply draw. A change of pace from the ordinary can clean those cobwebs out of your brain.
Skip a day. If you find you need a break from journaling, take it. There is no rule that says you MUST write in your journal everyday. By taking a break, you’ll have twice the material to write about when you return the following day.
Read a book on journaling. Whether you choose to read a book on journaling techniques or a journal written by a historical figure, this exercise will give you ideas to include in your journaling pages.
Read some of your past journal entries. Occasionally, you need to go back and read what you’ve written. There will be times when you chuckle, not believing what you see on the page. Other times, you’ll run across patterns and situations in your life that you will be surprised are happening again. Perhaps you’ll want to change some things, work on fixing problems or maybe you’ll be glad you already made changes and are avoiding rough times.
Start a journaling group. There is strength in numbers, even in the number two. While I realize journaling is a personal experience, sometimes writing with a partner can encourage you to dig deeper into your inner self. I had never thought about writing with anyone until Natalie Goldberg told about a close friend coming over and them just writing. I believe they wrote in their spiral bound notebooks for a couple hours. They didn’t read what they wrote afterwards, but they did go for a cup of Java and discussed some of their writing goals when they finished.
Remember when you journal, to keep it fun as you are learning about yourself. Doing something a little different can keep you opening the pages of your journal for years.
